Golf NB Tingley's Takes

Golf NB To Partner With Easy Golf Tour for 2019

Written by Dwayne Tingley

Golf New Brunswick will partner with Easy Golf Tour this season and tournament and league play will never be the same.

Easy Golf Tour, created and owned by Todd Chant of Sydney, N.S., provides easy-to-use software that will benefit players, Golf New Brunswick’s 47 member clubs and the provincial association.

Players will no longer have to register for tournaments and league play through a third party, Chant said, noting the process will be done on each club’s web site.

All other tournament and league information will also be securely kept there, he added.

“We’ve had great feedback so far because people appreciate how easy it is to run their tournaments and other activities within minutes,” Chant said.

“We started using it at a few clubs last year and it’s expanding quickly when everyone sees how easy it is to use. We are going to have great partners in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia this year. I really enjoy being part of the golf community and giving back like this.”

Golf New Brunswick will provide the software to all of its member clubs at no charge in 2019, with the clubs having the option of integrating the program into each of their own web sites.

Club’s choosing to use the system will then manage it by offering on-line registrations and other tournament management tools, including scoring and payments.

“We know people like to deal with their own club instead of working through another organization,” Chant said. “It’s easy to use and it’s more convenient.”

Golf New Brunswick executive-director Tyson Flinn said clubs will benefit from a financial and human resources perspective and there is a “real win-win” for players.

“Those who are participating in club events that are using the East Golf Tour software will experience an easy and seamless registration process, an improved on-course and digital experience and lower wait times for pairings and awards ceremonies,” Flinn said.

“It will help to make each event more fun, less stressful and create the most positive playing experience possible,” Flinn said.

All details of tournaments, league play and other golf events as well as payments are handled by the user-friendly software program.

“It’s all about giving each course and Golf New Brunswick a value-added product,” Chant said. “In fact, we go beyond that. Our software is set up to work with every course in North America. We can work with them all.”

Flinn predicts Golf New Brunswick’s partnership with Easy Golf Tour is “just the tip of the iceberg.”

“With Todd’s passion and dedication to collaborative product creation it is our hope that we can continue to work together to provide custom club management software options that can help align and streamline our facilities while saving them money and grow the reach of Golf New Brunswick, its programs and the game of golf as a whole in New Brunswick,” Flinn said.

Patricia Edwards to be Inducted into NB Sports Hall of Fame

Pat Edwards describes herself as a “very average” golfer, but her impact on the sport in New Brunswick will felt for many generations.

The 82-year-old Bathurst resident is one of six new inductees into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame. The shrine’s 50th annual induction ceremonies are scheduled for June 1 at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre in Bathurst.

“I was, of course, surprised (by the election to the hall of fame),” Edwards said. “I am very honoured and humbled.”

Edwards, who was born in Point La Nim, didn’t play golf as a junior, but she played her first round in 1958 at the Restigouche Golf Club. She was immediately hooked on the sport and wondered why she didn’t take it up sooner.

Edwards enjoyed competitions, but her legacy would come as a builder. Her tenure as a mentor for juniors and organizer for all levels would continue for many decades.

“Through the years being involved in golf, I have met so many interesting and extraordinary people  and the love of the sport – it is just too hard to walk away from it,” said Edwards, whose first foray as a builder was serving four years as the director of ladies’ junior golf in New Brunswick.

“When you are working with the juniors, one becomes very close to them and I was called ‘mom’ by many of them,” she added.

“I am very proud of their successes – Bari Gourley, who is now technical director of Golf N.B. and Allison Chisholm, who is course rating and handicap chair as well as having served as chair of N.B. Golf, are among the many young players I worked with.”

Edwards was chairwoman of junior development in New Brunswick from 1984-87 and has fond memories of helping at junior golf schools with Doug Brewer and Dave Robertson at Magnetic Hill.

She was president of the New Brunswick Ladies Golf Association in 1998-99 and later served as vice-president and president of the Canadian Ladies Golf Association. She represented Canada at several international tournaments and meetings.

“It was an honour, but one of the biggest thrills was seeing my youngest daughter, Cyndi, compete at the New Brunswick and Canadian junior championships,” said Edwards, who has three children with her husband Rex.

Another personal highlight was bringing and chairman the first national championship at her home course of Gowan Brae, when the venerable club hosted the junior ladies’ tournament in 1992.

“Having Carole Mix from Moncton and Judy Astle on the executive when I was the CLGA president was also very comforting and assuring,” she noted.

In 2008-09, Edwards served as president of the Canadian women’s senior golf association (New Brunswick branch.

“I have to give the sincerest thanks to all who have supported me over the years and I especially want to thank the two ladies who spearheaded my application for the new Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame – Brenda Parrot and Kathy Grebenc as well as endorsers Bari Gourley and Kathy Meagher.

“I want to give special thanks for the board of directors (of the hall), especially Betty Bouma, who has been a long-time friend and collaborator in skating.”

Edwards judged more than 23 national and international skating competitions.

The New Brunswick hall was formed 1970 and now has more than 700 members.

2018 NB Family Classic & Little Swingers Set for The Riverside

NB Family Classic & Adult Junior Tee Times – Click Here

For a second consecutive year, the NB Family Classic & the Jim Connolly “Little Swingers” returns to The Riverside Country Club on August 13th, which has proved to be a great host for this special event. It is only fitting to have the second annual Jim Connolly “Little Swingers” once again at The Riverside Country Club, a club that Jim called home for over 37 years.  Jim was the long-time professional at The Riverside and invented the ‘Little Swingers’ junior program for juniors from the age of 5 – 10 years of age. His program is what turned into the Future Links National Program. Last year’s event saw a small group of 4 teams which has grown into 8 this year. The Little Swingers will start their day with a clinic hosted by PGA of Canada Teaching Professional and Golf NB Technical Director Bari Gourley alongside Don Connolly, Head Professional at The Riverside Country Club before they tee off the back-nine at 9:30 am. Meanwhile the NB Family Classic will begin at 9:00 am off The Riverside’s first tee with Mother/Daughter division leading the field.

With the defending champions, Brett Wilson of the Fredericton Golf Club and Stephen Wilson of Sussex Golf & Curling Club unable to play this year, the Father/Son crown awaits a winner with a wide-open field filled with some past winners to keep things interesting. Mark and Jayme Shannon of Welsford return to the field after falling short of claiming the championship after a three-hole aggregate playoff against Brett & Stephen Wilson. Also returning to the field are Felipe D. & Felipe K. Marin of The Riverside who hope to use their home course knowledge to claim the 2018 NB Family Classic Championship, however they will have to battle a tough field as Darren & Nicholas Ritchie of Hampton return looking to improve on their T-4 performance in last year’s event.

With the absence of four-time Father/Daughter Champions Greg and Laura Jones from Country Meadows in this year’s event, there is an opportunity for a new champion to claim the crown.  Favorites in this year’s event include Country Meadow’s builder and owner, Doug Sullivan and his daughter Sue who finished T-3 in 2017 along with Tracy Gallant of The Riverside and Ed Moore of Kingswood who look to improve on their 2nd place performance in 2017.

The Mother/Son Division will feature 2017 Champions Lois and Greg Stewart of The Riverside Country Club. Returning to the field are four-time Mother/Son Champions Debbie and Steve McLaughlin of the Moncton Golf & Country Club who look to re-claim their title after finishing in 2nd place and three strokes back in last year’s event.

The Mother/Daughter pair of Kathy & Kathryn Meagher of the Fredericton Golf Club will once again return to the field looking to capture their 11th NB Family Classic Mother/Daughter Championship. However, it will not be an easy task as Barb and Allison Chisholm of The Riverside will enter this year’s event looking to continue their competitive play with the Meagher’s as the two look to duke it out for the crown once again. Joining the field in this year’s event is Mona Meldrum of Sackville and Sara Youngner of South Carolina who will be looking to leave their mark at this year’s event.

The Adult/ Junior Division will feature The Riverside Country Club’s John Elliot who paired with Liam Marin this year. Each year him and Felipe Marin alternate which Marin boy each will play with. The duo will be looking to claim their second consecutive championship, third total.

This year’s event looks to have no shortage of competition within each division which should make for an exciting and fun day of golf at The Riverside Country Club. The event will begin with registration starting at 8:00 am followed by the Little Swingers clinic at 8:15 and tee time beginning at 9:00. Following the round, a meal will be provided for all the players.

Round 2 of the 2018 NB Senior Men’s & Mid Master Championship Presented by Audi Moncton began with the Senior & Super-Senior teeing off of holes 1 and 10 at 8:00 am. 2017 NB Senior Men’s Champion Wilf Pilgrim of Kingswood would lead the field off of the 1st tee along with Kevin Farmer of Herring Cove and Jim Haddad of Maplewood. For a second consecutive round the players were faced to deal with strong wind conditions as they set out to put themselves in contention for the third and final round.

In the Senior Division, Moncton’s Eric Haley entered round two sitting four strokes off the lead thanks to his great play in today’s difficult conditions he will be leading tomorrow’s final group. Haley’s second round 3-under par 69 was Tuesday’s low round which was comprised of 6 birdies, 1 eagle, 7 pars, 3 bogeys and 1 double. Joining Haley in the final pairing on Wednesday is Hampton’s Mike Breen and St. Quentin’s Denis Beaulieu who are both tied for second place after the duo both recorded first round even-par 72’s and second round 2-over par 74’s.

Fox Creek’s Jean Leblanc, Guy MacKnight of Country Meadows and Fredericton’s Sonny Phillips are all tied for the lead in the Super-Senior Division, the trio are all entering Wednesday’s round sitting on top of the leaderboard at 11-over par. Sonny’s round of 76, 4-over par in today’s tough conditions was enough to move him into the final Super-Senior group for tomorrow. He will be competing against LeBlanc and MacKnight for the Super-Senior Championship in what can be assumed to be a true test of skill and course knowledge with more links like conditions expected. 2017 NB Super-Senior Champion Herrick Hansen of Aroostook Valley is currently sitting in a three-way tie for fourth place alongside Bernard Leger of Royal Oaks and Gilles Masse as he looks to battle back and claim his second consecutive Super-Senior Championship.

The Riverside Country Club’s Edward Reevey enters the final round of the 2018 NB Mid-Master Championship Presented by Audi Moncton looking to capture the championship for the fourth consecutive year. Reevey started round 2 at 1-under par before complimenting it a second-round score of 1-over par 73 on a difficult windy day at Royal Oaks. Joining Reevey in the final round is three time NB Mid-Master Champion Tony MacKinnon of Fredericton Golf Club. MacKinnon’s even par performance on Tuesday was an exchange of pars, bogeys and birdies as the 2009, 2012 and 2014 NB Mid-Master Champion made a final push into contention for the 2018 Championship. Rounding out the final group is Edumundston’s Darren MacPherson who recorded a 3-over par 75 on Tuesday to add to his previous 4-over par 76 during round one. Darren sits 7 shots behind the leader Reevey and 2 behind MacKinnon as the three look ahead to the final round and the chance to represent New Brunswick at the 2018 Canadian Mid-Amateur Championships as the final member of the Willingdon Cup Team.

The third and final round of the 2018 NB Senior Men’s and Mid-Master Championship Presented by Audi Moncton will begin at 8:00am Wednesday morning with the Mid-Masters teeing off of hole #1 & #10. The first pairing of the day includes Lawrence Justason of St. George, Mike Bourque of Moncton and Ken Barter of Petitcodiac off of hole #1.

Up for grabs on Wednesday are three spots along with a first alternate position on Team NB which will represent New Brunswick at the 2018 Canadian Senior Championships from September 4th-7th at Gowan Brae Golf & Country Club. This will be the fifth time that Gowan Brae has hosted a national championship event. In the past, it has hosted the Junior Girls National Championship twice, in 1992 & 2006, the Mid-Amateur National Championship in 1998, and the National Ladies Team Club Championship in 1996.

The third and final position on the Mid-Amateur Team NB, along with the first alternate position, will be awarded at the 2018 NB Mid-Master Championships Presented by Audi Moncton. The final team member will be joining the Willingdon Cup Team alongside Alex Palmer of The Riverside Country Club and Ryan Allaby of Hampton who will represent the province at the 2018 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, to be held from August 21 to 24, 2018 at the Victoria Golf Club in Victoria, British Columbia.

Palmer started the round at even-par in third place sitting a few shots behind the co-leaders Nick Earle of Westfield and Mike Landry of Fredericton. Alex’s Saturday 69 included 10 pars, 4 birdies, 1 eagle and 3 bogeys.

In second place is Mike Landry of Fredericton and Nick Earle of Westfield who both felt the effects of the heat on The Riverside’s firm and fast greens. Nick has matched Landry’s score every round thus far as he also recorded a 2-over par 74 during round 3.

In the Mid-Amateur Division, The Riverside’s Alex Palmer also leads at 3-under followed closely by Fredericton’s Mike Landry at 2-under in second.
