Hebert Takes 1st Round Lead at 2019 RBC Dominion Securities NB Men’s Amateur Championship

by Golf NB

The competitors of the 2019 RBC Dominion Securities Men’s Amateur Championship were greeted with a picturesque sunny day as 82 of New Brunswick’s top amateurs teed it up in the 89th playing of the RBC Dominion Securities NB Men’s Amateur Championship at the scenic Fraser Edmundston Golf Club in New Brunswick’s beautiful north.

Day one would see the Fredericton pair of Calvin Ross, of Kingswood Golf & JH Sports, and two time RBC Dominion Securities NB Men’s Amateur Champion, Michel Landry (2002, 2016) of the Fredericton Golf Club pair open the 72 hole championship with a pair of two under par (-2), 71’s on Fraser Edmundston’s 6,700 yard par 73 layout.

Ross would have an eventful outward nine holes that would see consecutive birdies on #3, #4 and #5 bookended by bogeys on the par four 2nd and 6th holes.  His fourth birdie, on the par five 9th, on the would see him make the turn in a two under par (-2), 35, two shots clear of Landry who would post a an even par (E), 37, on the front courtesy of birdies on #4, #5, and #9 which were evened out by bogeys on #3, #5, and #8 to help tie him into the lead.  The pair would continue to battle on the back nine as Ross would continue to capitalize on Fraser Edmundston`s par 5`s with birdies at the 10th and 11th, moving himself to five under par on the club`s five par 5`s on the day.  Despite his par five dominance, bogey`s on the par four 13th and 18th, coupled with Landry`s birdies at the 10th and 16th would see the two post the early score to beat.

Not to be outdone, Francois Hebert of Club de Memramcook would step up to the challenge and shoot to the front of the pack through nine holes.  Despite bogeys at the 1st and 6th, Hebert would card a three under par (-3), 34, on the front with the help of 5 birdies on holes #3, #4, #5, #8 & #9).  Consistency was the key from that point on as Hebert would birdie the 10th and bogey the 15th to cruise home in an even par (E) par 36, for a first round total of three under par (-3), 70 and the first round lead.

In fourth place is another two time RBC Dominion Securities Men’s Amateur Champion (2010, 2017) Darren Roach of The Riverside Country Club, who would take a -1 (72) heading into day two.  A three way tie rounds out the top 5 with Danek Hadley of the Gowan Brae Golf & Country Club, 2019 Junior Boys Team NB member Daniel Kirby of the Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club, and Stu Musgrave of the Country Meadows Golf Club all posting even par (E) rounds of 73.
